Keith Mackay Quality 2013 – Tips

Second race on the card at Randwick on Saturday is a Listed race for 2yo fillies. Everage, who was very good last week in the Kindergarten Stakes is the narrow favourite from Major Conquest ($3.50) and Darley runner, Scrutiny ($5.50) but, there is plenty to like about most of these so expect a competitive race.

Keith Mackay Quality Form Guide

1. EVERAGE – N Berry (10)

This daughter of Zizou is yet to run a bad race in her five starts for trainer Craig Carmody. She ran second to Overreach in the Widden Stakes (1100m) before winning at Canberra and at her last start, ran a terrific race when only bettered by the promising Safeguard in last week’s G3 Kindergarten Stakes. Pays for her form with a weight of 58kgs here and has drawn wide but her form is solid.

2. MAJOR CONQUEST – N Rawiller (6)

This filly by More Than Ready has had two starts and ran third in both of them. The first being behind Diamond Oasis (has been good since) in what turned out to be a slick Gosford Maiden and then tried hard when a ½ length behind Scandiva (great last week behind Guelph in Sires Produce). Good form surrounds this filly and being from the Waterhouse yard, expect her to be in the firing line.

3. QUEEN PIN –         (3)

David Payne trains this Pins filly who resumes from a twelve week spell. Her initial campaign consisted of three runs and included a win in a Hawkesbury Maiden but both efforts in town saw her struggle. Has had two barrier trails in readiness for her return but will have to have improved significantly over the break.

4. LITTLE MISS SMILEY –     (1)

She made her debut in Queensland for trainer John Thompson but didn’t enjoy the heavy conditions and finished well down the track in a Doomben Maiden. Heavy conditions again saw her unplaced at her next start before striking a dead track, jumping straight to the front and wining a Doomben Maiden by 3 ¼ a little over three weeks ago. Drawn to lead but will find the deep of this field much tougher than last start.

5. MORE THAN MUM –     (2)

Well bred stable-mate to Little Miss Smiley who hasn’t lived up to her breeding in two starts thus far. She ran second to last on debut in a Canterbury Maiden and only improved slightly (ninth, beaten 9.2 lengths) in a Warwick Farm Maiden a fortnight ago. Will struggle here.

6. QUELLE BEAUTE – P Robl (8)

First starter by Stratum out of Amen Brother mare called Shabet. She had a trail in December before being tipped out by trainer Gary Portelli and has had two more trials since the end of March, the latest of which she ran second at Randwick a week and half ago. Robl has ridden her in both trails and sticks with her here. Best to monitor betting.

7. SCRUTINY – K McEvoy (5)

Darley will be looking to continue the good run of success with 2yo’s this season (Sidestep, Guelph, Safeguard) with this daughter of Exceed and Excel. She’s only had the one start to date and that was in a Gosford Maiden back in mid December last year were she ran second to the since well performed Romantic Moon. Hasn’t been seen at the trial but has been kept very safe at $5.50

8. SHE’S A DANICA – C Brown (9)

Rob Heathcote brings this daughter of Sebring to Sydney after two runs in her home-state over the Christmas/New Year period. She comfortably won a Sunshine Coast Maiden on debut before registering a third to Magic Millions winner Real Surrel in Open company at Eagle Farm. That effort coupled with Heathcote deciding to start her here first up, creates plenty of interest.

9. SUNSHINE ROYALE –     (4)

Warwick Farm conditioner David Pfieffer has produced this filly by Haradasun only once, that was in December where she finished sixth behind Twilight Royale and Fureza, both of who have displayed good form since. She’s had two barrier trails in preparation for her return with the latest being an impressive 4 ¾ length at Warwick Farm last week. Appears to have plenty of potential and will have only benefited from the break.

10. TWODIAMONDROSES –      (7)

Stable mate to Sunshine Royale but, judging on her debut run last week which was a sixth of eight at Orange, she’s only in give the stable-mate some company.

OVERVIEW

This will be a competitive race with several fillies, at limited opportunities thus far, displaying plenty of potential. I’m going with Sunshine Royale. The Haradasun filly was green but good on debut and those who finished in front of her have been more than competitive since. The break appears to have done her good going by her trial win last week. Major Conquest has been good at both is starts and that form has certainly been franked with Scandiva’s effort last week. Final place goes to Scrutiny – in the form Darley are in with their juveniles, it’s hard not to include her despite not having seen her at any public trials. She’s done nothing wrong but with the big weight, wide draw and on the quick back up, think the $3.30 for Everage might be worth risking.
