News:

The quest for a stakes win with Precious Gem continues at Caulfield in the Listed Anniversary Vase.

Precious Gem has been runner-up three times at black-type level and exceeded trainer Henry Dwyer’s expectations first-up at Mornington when she won the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) before Thermal Current rallied to beat her by a half neck.

She is set to get her next chance at an important stakes win in Saturday’s 1400m race.

“She’s itching to win a black-type race,” Dwyer said.

Dwyer thought Precious Gem would be in need of the run at Mornington but believes he learned more about the six-year-old in what was only her third start for the Caulfield trainer.

“You find out a bit more about a horse the more circumstances you put them in,” Dwyer said.

“She went as well as she ever has first-up. So maybe we just found out she’s a bit better on the fresh side, and we’ll just keep training her like that.”

Dwyer was sent Precious Gem with the objective of trying to get a stakes win on her CV before she is retired to the breeding barn.

He pinpointed next month’s Group Two Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide as the original target but now believes the mare could be more effective at shorter distances.

“I know she has won over 1700 metres before but I’m not convinced she’s not better at 1300 and 1400 metres, a bit on the fresher side as a get back and run-on sort of sprinter,” he said.

“She seems to rate best when she does that so if she can get a soft run behind them and just get the gaps at the right time, she’ll be hard to beat in any race she goes in. Hopefully this Saturday.”

While Precious Gem could still head to the Queen Of The South Stakes in three weeks, Dwyer is also considering Brisbane winter carnival options.

Charmed Harmony, runner-up to Black Heart Bart in the Victoria Handicap over the course and distance last start in fast time, heads the weights for the Anniversary Vase with 60kg while Precious Gem is on the 54kg limit.
