First of the ‘majors’ is the JJ Atkins (Race 6) over 1600m with exciting Kiwi two-year-old Melody Belle a dominant favourite after a runaway win in the Sires Produce.

Tracking Taking Aim into the straight, the filly took a short while to wind up but really exploded at the 200m mark to put a real space in the field.

An administrative error saw connections have to fork out a late entry fee, but on that run she’s clearly in pole position to recoup that and more with nearly $400,000 available to the winner.

Priced at 2.50 at the start of the week, we saw plenty of early dosh after she drew comfortably in seven and are expecting her odds to tighten even further on Saturday.

With five of the eight favourites saluting and no real surprises, our Brisbane traders took a battering last weekend and we desperately need some results to go our way this time around.

Taking Aim looks a capable colt whose only real failure to date was at Group 1 level in a strong Blue Diamond.

However, once again he has been handed an awkward draw here (13) and we’re struggling to envisage how he could make up nearly five lengths on the filly.

With the other Sires placegetter, Pierata, also handed a difficult assignment from out in 14, we didn’t mind the run of Paul Butterworth’s Capital Gain and felt the extra 200m might be to his advantage.
