Jedibeel ripe for 2025 Doomben 10,000 mission

Trainer Brad Widdup is no stranger to narrow defeats in major races, but he’s optimistic that Jedibeel can reverse recent fortunes in the Doomben 10,000.

Jedibeel was narrowly beaten by Libertad in the Victory Stakes (1200m), a result that echoed Widdup’s past experiences with Icebath, who suffered close losses in the Golden Eagle, Doncaster Mile, and Cantala Stakes.

“I have been through a few of them,” Widdup remarked. “I’m the King of photo finishes that don’t fall my way. It’s a big thrill to see them run well in big races but you’ve got to have a tough demeanour to get through it.”

Icebath eventually broke through with a win in the 2022 Empire Rose Stakes, and Widdup hopes Jedibeel can follow suit. The five-year-old has been carefully managed, progressing through the ranks before stepping up during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Jedibeel secured a victory in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) and delivered a commendable performance in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m), finishing just over two lengths behind the winner.

“I have probably just held him back a little bit and he is finally getting there,” Widdup said. “It has been good to give him a trip away and he ran great the other day. Another run or two up there won’t hurt him then we will probably stop and see what happens in the spring but he’s going really well.”

With a full field of 16, including speedy contenders like Overpass, Hidden Wealth, and Belclare, Jedibeel is poised for an economical run from barrier three. Tyler Schiller, who previously guided him to victory in the Challenge Stakes, will be back in the saddle on Saturday.
