Star jockey Jason Collett closed out the metropolitan racing season in style, landing a winning treble at Warwick Farm to cap off an excellent year in the saddle. On a wet winter’s afternoon, Collett opened his account in the MyPlates Handicap (1600m) aboard the Bjorn Baker-trained Fairway Star before adding further victories on Prima Bella for Matt Smith in the Headwater @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1000m) and The Replicant for Joe Pride in the final event.
His treble followed a four-win haul at Randwick last Saturday, securing Collett second place on the Sydney jockeys’ premiership with 74 wins, behind only James McDonald on 83. The season was also highlighted by Collett’s eighth career Group 1 win when guiding Stefi Magnetica to victory in the Doncaster Mile (1600m) in April, while he also combined with Fangirl to claim the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) in February.
“I’m really pleased with how the season finished,” Collett said. “I’m getting opportunities on better horses now and the results are starting to reflect that. The aim is to keep that momentum going into the new season.”
Earlier in the day, trainer Kristen Buchanan produced promising colt Tambeloa to win the Keenland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1600m). The two-year-old is by 2020 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa out of multiple stakes winner Gamble Me and was a $60,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
“He was a big, raw type that probably didn’t appeal as an early-running two-year-old, so we might have been fortunate to get him at that price,” Buchanan said. “He’s a big baby and still learning, but he’s showing a lot of promise and I think he’ll be even better over longer trips. You never know—there could be a Derby in his future.”
Buchanan said she would monitor how Tambeloa pulls up before mapping out the next step in his campaign.
