Jamie Melham has been denied her attempt to have a careless riding suspension lessened, meaning she will be absent from Derby Day at Flemington on Saturday.
Melham, who secured victories in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups last year with Half Yours, was expected to ride the impressive Sydney filly Satono Glow in the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton for Satono Glow had Ben Melham, Jamie’s husband, on standby and he will now take the ride on the filly in the feature sprint.
The jockey was appealing a four-meeting ban for careless riding that she received after partnering Mahroona to second place behind Grafterburners in the Group 2 Sydney Stakes on Everest Day.
Racing NSW stewards charged Melham with careless riding, citing that she interfered with Coal Crusher at the 300-metre mark, which caused “Coal Crusher being crowded onto Generosity and losing its rightful running.”.
Satono Glow, having won four of her five starts, is the $4 second favourite for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, behind The Next Episode at $3.
She has had previous success down the Flemington straight, winning both her starts there impressively under Melham in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes back in March and the Cap D’Antibes Stakes last month.
Satono Glow enters the Coolmore Stud Stakes after a dominant win over her rivals in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill on October 10.
Melham’s four-meeting suspension is set to end after the Derby Day meeting, and she will be available to ride on Melbourne Cup Day next week.
