Chris Waller believed Island Dream needed to prove she was ready for higher-level competition, and the filly delivered with an impressive win at Rosehill.
The homebred daughter of 2016 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) champion Divine Prophet now appears poised for a potential tilt at the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m).
Starting at $14, Island Dream secured a one-length victory in the Ranvet Handicap (1500m), handing Atelier ($6) his first defeat, while race favorite Spaceballs ($2.80) finished third.
“She needed to step up from her maiden win, and she has,” Waller said, referencing her February 12 success at Hawkesbury.
“I really liked how she attacked the line today, and she just keeps getting better.
“I think she’s earned a shot at a race like the Kembla fillies feature.”
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who had previously ridden Island Dream in trials, was impressed by her performance.
“She quickened up beautifully at Hawkesbury, so it wasn’t a shock to see her run well today,” McEvoy said.
“She stepped up in grade but has a great attitude, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she handles even further distance.”
With the Kembla Grange Classic set for March 14, Island Dream’s win marked Waller’s third triumph in the first four races at Rosehill.
In the following event, Imperial Force produced a dominant display, giving trainer Bjorn Baker a double in the first five races. The three-year-old colt looks like an exciting prospect.
A $285,000 purchase via Inglis Digital by Darby Racing, the son of Snitzel wasted no time making an impact, scoring his first victory since moving to Baker from Waller.
