Irish horses top Caulfield Cup 2016 weights

Two horses from one of the world’s most famous stables in Ireland head the weights for this year’s Caulfield Cup.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Order Of St George and his globetrotting stablemate Highland Reel have both been given 58kg for the $3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15.

They will be out to emulate Dunaden (2012) and Admire Rakti (2014) as recent internationally-trained horses to carry top weight to win should they line up on October 15.

Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance and Australian Cup winner Preferment are next in the handicaps with 56.5kg while French horse Erupt and last year’s Caulfield Cup placegetter Our Ivanhowe both have 56kg.

Derby winners Tarzino and Tavago are the highest-weighted four-year-olds on 54kg, with early favourite Tarzino out to become just the fourth horse to complete the VRC Derby-Caulfield Cup double.

Tavago will be striving to emulate 2015 Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan who won the Australian Derby earlier that year.

Tarzino is the early TAB favourite at $13 ahead of Highland Reel, Jameka and Scottish at $18.

VRC Oaks winner Jameka has 51.5kg while Godolphin-owned galloper Scottish, trained by Charlie Appleby, has 54.5kg.

Order Of St George, whose owners include Lloyd Williams, won this year’s Ascot Gold Cup while last year’s Cox Plate placegetter Highland Reel is the highest-rated among the 171 Caulfield Cup nominations.

Highland Reel won the Hong Kong Vase last year and the Group One King George VI (2012m) in England earlier this year.

First acceptances are taken next Tuesday.
