Singapore-based Australian jockey Corey Brown is happy to still be in the minds of trainers as the spring carnival approaches.
Brown has five mounts at Caulfield on Saturday, including Thames Court in one of the day’s features, the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, a race he won in 2003 aboard Exceed And Excel.
It will be Brown’s first visit to Melbourne since the spring of 2014 although he has ridden at recent carnivals in Brisbane and Sydney.
“I’m just happy to come down and show my face again,” Brown said.
“I’m always available if selected and it’s good to get away and compete against the old crew down in Australia again.
“It was a pleasure to get the call and be in someone’s mind again.”
Thames Court has finished second at both outings this campaign, firstly over 1200m at Caulfield before a narrow defeat at the hands of Don’t Doubt Mamma in the Let’s Elope Stakes on September 10.
The David Brideoake-trained mare has raced nine times, registering three wins and four minor placings.
The 52kg Thames Court carries on Saturday won’t pose a problem as one of Brown’s five rides in Singapore on Friday night has 51.5kg.
“She’s been a bit of a bridesmaid this time with her two placings but she always runs well,” Brown said.
“I spoke briefly to Craig Williams about her and he’s got her down as a decent chance.”
Brown is sitting fourth on the Singapore jockeys’ premiership this season, 10 wins behind fellow Australian Vlad Duric and two off third placed Danny Beasley.
But he is lamenting the 55 seconds placings he’ has also ridden.
“I’m having my normal career, a run of seconds. I had another couple of close seconds on the weekend,” Brown said.
“It’s a little bit frustrating here at the moment. There’s a lot of jockeys and the field sizes aren’t very big.
“It’s very competitive and very tough to get rides. It’s even a lot harder getting rides than when Joao (Moreira) was here.”
Brown flies out of Singapore at midnight on Friday and returns on the midnight flight on Saturday for Sunday’s Kranji meeting where he has five rides.
“I’m a good sleeper,” Brown said.
“I can sleep standing up.”
