Golden Slipper equal favourite Incognito will take another key step toward the world’s richest juvenile feature when he returns in the Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill.
The colt announced himself in the spring with a classy win in the Breeders’ Plate (1000m), and he has since tuned up for his first run back with two trials, the latest seeing him finish a solid third behind stablemates Enriched and Manaal.
Trainer Michael Freedman has been delighted with the way the youngster has returned, both in his physique and his attitude.
“He has certainly strengthened up a little bit, and he’s still got a beautiful temperament, which is just as important,” Freedman said.
“I think he’s come back in great order.”
Freedman also knows what it takes to prepare a Slipper contender, having trained Incognito’s sire Stay Inside to win the 2021 Golden Slipper after a short build-up that included runs in the Pierro Plate (1100m) and Todman Stakes (1200m).
Incognito’s route is slightly different, though the Todman still features as part of the campaign.
“The long-term plan would be the Canonbury into the Silver Slipper and Todman,” Freedman said.
“Things can change a little bit with two-year-olds, but that would be the plan at the moment.”
Saturday’s Canonbury Stakes (1100m) has attracted eight colts and geldings, with Incognito set to carry 57.5kg under set weights plus penalties, leaving him with three kilos more than the rest.
The fillies will contest the Widden Stakes (1100m), where Freedman will also be represented by Hardanger, who was third to Slipper equal favourite Warwoven at her lone start in December.
