Returning to Randwick could be the key for in-form sprinter With Your Blessing as he lines up for a breakthrough Group success in the Missile Stakes this Saturday.
Trainer John Thompson rated the gelding’s fifth-place finish behind Romeo’s Choice on resumption as solid, although admitted he had anticipated a better result based on the gelding’s sharp trackwork in the lead-up.
One possible explanation may lie in the venue itself. Thompson noted a clear difference in performance depending on track, with With Your Blessing struggling at Rosehill but thriving at Randwick.
“He was going well into it. For some reason, he just doesn’t go as good at Rosehill as what he does at Randwick,” Thompson said.
“He’s had eight starts there and has barely run a place and he’s the most consistent horse. He tries. It’s a bit weird.”
The Randwick return is especially well-timed given the wet forecast. With Your Blessing is proven in heavy going, and Randwick was rated a heavy 8 on Friday with further showers expected ahead of race day.
His standout win on wet ground came two years ago during The Gong meeting at Kembla Grange, where he produced a dominant display.
“It was a terrific win that day. He brained them,” Thompson said.
“He is going well. Back to Randwick. He handles the wet. Up to 1200, perfect. He’s got a good draw and he hasn’t missed a beat. He has come on from the run.”
“He will be up on the speed out of trouble too, that will probably help on Saturday.”
Thompson has opted to scratch Opal Fields from the Midway Handicap (1100m) due to the heavy conditions and is cautious with Bundeena, though still leaning towards starting him in the Ranvet Handicap (1000m).
“He is better on soft but he’s a horse that tries so hard,” Thompson said.
“He will run well again because he’s going super.”
