Hayes Rolls the dice in Summoned Stakes 2025

Lindsay Park is looking to make the most of a late-spring opening with Roll On High when she steps out at Caulfield this Saturday.

The five-year-old mare will attempt to break a long winning drought in the $200,000 Group 3 Summoned Stakes, a race that has been added to her campaign after a strong performance during Cup week.

Roll On High attacked the line impressively for second in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes at Flemington just 11 days earlier, prompting co-trainer Ben Hayes to reconsider her original spring path.

“We were originally not going to head to this race, but we looked at the noms and thought it was very suitable,” Hayes said.

“She’s come through the last run excellent. She ran some of the fastest splits of the meeting, but still got beaten, and I think this is a good opportunity to get another Stakes win.”

Early markets reflect that assessment, with Roll On High a $3.30 favourite and drawn in barrier eight of ten.

Although talented, Roll On High has not posted a victory since taking out the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) on June 1 last year, and she hasn’t been tested beyond 1400m since finishing fourth in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) back in March 2023.

Her only other attempt past 1400m was as a lightly raced filly when she ran second in a 1500m Bendigo maiden under the care of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman.

Hayes acknowledges the 1600m trip presents a challenge, but believes the timing is right to stretch her out.

“It’s a big question mark, but she hasn’t been tried out to that trip very much and the way she hit the line the other day, you’d suggest a mile would be no problems.”

A daughter of Shamus Award, Roll On High is out of All Highs On Me, a High Chaparral mare closely related to Victoria Derby winner Monaco Consul.
