Teams Hawkes training trio weigh up Brave call

Brave One is poised for another strong performance this weekend, but Team Hawkes has yet to confirm whether the promising gelding will line up in Sydney or Melbourne.

The three-year-old holds nominations for both the Quayclean Handicap (1300m) at Randwick and the Shop Flemington Handicap (1100m) at Flemington. He drew barrier 12 in Sydney and gate 13 for the Flemington straight, but co-trainer Michael Hawkes says distance and conditions will also influence the decision.

“It’s not just about the barriers. Sydney’s race is over 1300, Melbourne is 1100. He’s ready to win either way — we’re just looking for the best balance,” Hawkes said.

The stable will make a final call by Thursday evening, benefiting from their dual-city setup which allows for late flexibility based on track conditions and weather.

Brave One has shown promise this prep with back-to-back runner-up finishes on heavy tracks against older opposition. He’ll return to his own age group this weekend — a move Hawkes believes is ideal at this stage of his development.

“He’s going super,” Hawkes said. “Dropping back to three-year-old grade is just right. He’s got a future and whichever race we go with, he’ll be a strong contender.”

Dylan Gibbons is booked if Brave One stays in Sydney, while Jye McNeil will take the reins in Melbourne.
