Gallo Nero, the only horse to have toppled star filly Apocalyptic, will kick off his spring campaign in Saturday’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill as Hawkes Racing looks ahead to a summer tilt at the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).
The son of Wootton Bassett beat Apocalyptic at Randwick in December before going on to place in the Magic Millions and Champagne Classics in Queensland, finishing his juvenile season with an unplaced run in the BTC Sires’ Produce on a heavy surface. Apocalyptic has since gone on to sweep Sydney’s Princess Series, capped by her Group 1 Flight Stakes triumph.
Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said Gallo Nero has developed beautifully over the break and is ready to launch his new campaign. “We’ve always had a high opinion of this horse,” Hawkes said. “He beat Apocalyptic at Randwick, then ran really well at the Magic Millions. He’s matured into a lovely colt — very placid, great attitude, and he’s in for a really good prep.”
While first-up against race-fit rivals, Hawkes believes the colt has done enough work to be competitive. “I’m pretty comfortable with where he’s at,” he said. “He’s forward enough but will keep improving through the prep. He’s had a good jump-out and a solid trial, so we’re looking forward to seeing him back.”
The ultimate goal is the Magic Millions Guineas in January, though Hawkes said their plans could shift depending on how he performs at Rosehill. “We’re open with him — it’s about finding the right races leading up to the Gold Coast,” he said.
Hawkes Racing will also saddle up Gangsta Granny and Husk in the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m). Gangsta Granny hasn’t raced since a brave third in the Sheraco Stakes (1200m), while Husk was a last-start winner. “Gangsta Granny looks really well placed and has freshened up perfectly,” Hawkes said. “Husk is in good form and a lightweight chance, she just needs some luck from the draw.”
