Griffith makes Compelling case for sprinter’s return in JRA Plate 2026

Trainer Mack Griffith believes both of his runners are capable of outperforming market expectations when they line up at Randwick on Saturday.

Compelling Truth is the outsider of the field for the Group 3 JRA Plate, while stablemate Crown Legend is also at long odds in the Highway Handicap.

Despite being quoted at $26, Compelling Truth brings strong form into the race, having previously beaten favourite The Instructor and finishing runner-up to Angel Capital in Listed grade last preparation.

“I don’t know whether it’s because he’s country-trained, but I was surprised at the price,” Griffith said.

“He’s beaten The Instructor before and when we won the Wagga Town Plate, that horse ran third.

“He’ll run an honest race like he always does and I’m just happy to have him back at the track.”

The gelding was spelled after his run in The Kosciuszko, but Griffith said that effort came with excuses.

“He had a small trickle out of his nose and the race didn’t suit him,” he said.

“He likes to roll along and something took off mid-race which upset his rhythm.

“We were going to Melbourne, but this race didn’t look as strong as expected and it made sense to stay in Sydney.”

Crown Legend also heads to town after a strong win at Gunnedah and Griffith believes his $26 quote underrates his ability.

“He’s had two really solid runs back and there’ll be good speed for him to chase,” he said.
