Gollan scratches runners from 2016 Weetwood Handicap Field

Trainer Tony Gollan has let his head rule his heart and has scratched his two runners from the Listed Weetwood Handicap at Toowoomba.

Gollan had Casual Choice and Whiskey Allround in Saturday’s $150,000 race and he hoped one of the pair could break a 30-year drought in the race for his family.

However, when he saw the Casual Choice in barrier 14 and Whiskey Allround in 19 his heart sank and made the tough decision to scratch both horses.

“I have made it very clear the Weetwood was a race I would love to win. I am a Toowoomba boy and we all want to win the race,” Gollan said.

“But I trained in Toowoomba before moving to Brisbane and I know the track. It is very hard to win from outside barriers at the 1200 metres.”

He said Casual Choice was a horse who needed to get cover from a good barrier.

“He isn’t a horse who can sit deep and win and especially with 59kg,” Gollan said.

He said Whiskey Allround would have raced on the pace but would have been caught deep.

He said both horses would race at the Sunshine Coast or Doomben in the next fortnight.

“There is nothing wrong with them and it was just a matter of being sensible about barriers,” Gollan said.
