Horse Racing News: Godolphin filly to pounce at Mornington races

Trainer James Cummings is confident that a favourable draw and a small field could help Thames return to the winner’s list this Saturday at Mornington.

The Godolphin-trained filly lines up in the No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (1200m), marking her fourth outing this preparation.

Although she’s been running consistently, Thames has found one or two better in each of her three races this campaign.

Still, Cummings believes Saturday’s race presents a great opportunity for her to break through again.

Thames posted back-to-back wins at Cranbourne and Geelong last year, one of which came under Daniel Stackhouse, who is back aboard after guiding her to second behind unbeaten Soft Love at Caulfield on April 5.

Her previous run on March 19 saw her finish behind Zloties at Sandown—form that has since stacked up with Zloties winning at Bendigo last week.

Cummings is optimistic that Mornington’s tight-turning track will suit her racing style.

“I like the way that filly is going,” Cummings said.

“She’s got a good finish to her and Stacky can take advantage of the good draw without having the filly out of her comfort zone.

“He can have her ready to pounce, bide his time and, hopefully, enjoy the ride.”

In early markets, Thames is rated a $4.80 second favourite behind Vestas, who leads the betting at $3.20.
