Gluyas gives Guru green light in SA Derby 2025

Goldrush Guru is set to be given another Classic opportunity after trainer Andrew Gluyas saw enough in Saturday’s performance to target the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) this weekend.

The Victoria Derby winner ran fifth in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m), beaten 2½ lengths as a $4.80 third pick, after over-racing early in the run. Gluyas believes the quick back-up could be key to settling him better.

“We’ll monitor him through the week, our intention is to go to the Derby,” Gluyas said.

“He’ll be better for that hit out today.”

Jason Holder allowed the gelding to roll to the lead after pulling fiercely early. He managed to settle better once in front but was headed at the 150m by winner Athanatos.

“He’s keen, and that’s been his problem this preparation,” Gluyas said. “Post-Australian Guineas, he’s been a bit aggressive. But with that sturdy hit out today, that might just season him for next week.”

After placing third in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m), Goldrush Guru failed to fire in the Rosehill Guineas and ATC Derby, prompting Gluyas to turn his attention to the Adelaide carnival.

“A month between runs, so for him to take up the lead and get run down, I thought he stuck on fairly. It wasn’t a bad effort.”

“He’s not pretending to race so we intend to run him, provided he pulls up alright during the week.”

Race winner Athanatos won’t be backing up, with Phillip Stokes confirming he’ll be spelled instead.

“He definitely won’t be going to the Derby,” Stokes said. “He’ll be on our truck on the way home, and we’ll look forward to the Spring. I think when he comes back next prep, he’ll probably be a nice miler.”

Second favourite Scintillante finished 13th and will also head to the paddock, according to trainer Cliff Brown.

Goldrush Guru is now $13 in betting for the Derby, with Statuario leading the market at $3.50, and Lavalier, runner-up in the Chairman’s Stakes, into $5. Trainer James Cummings has indicated Lavalier is likely to back up.
