Trainer Jason Coyle came close to withdrawing Catch The Glory from the The Warra on several occasions, but his last-minute call to proceed resulted in a valuable stakes breakthrough for the mare.
The team’s initial plan centred on next weekend’s Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, yet when the The Warra (1000m) drew fewer runners than expected, Coyle began to seriously weigh up the shorter option.
Concerns about forecast rain lingered, and once the wet weather hit, he again debated whether to wait — right up until Zealously was withdrawn because of the softening track.
“I thought I’d have a look at the track when I got here (to Kembla Grange), and then I looked at my phone and Peter (Snowden) had already scratched (Zealously),” Coyle said.
“He beat me to it, and lucky he did.
“I know she tries hard and even if she didn’t let down as good as she possibly could, I knew she’d still run a race.”
With Jason Collett guiding her to the superior ground out wide, Catch The Glory ($4.60) swept home late to nab The Black Cloud ($4 fav) in the final bounds.
Sunrise ($4.20) gave local supporters plenty to cheer, controlling the race early and fighting on strongly for third.
Coyle confirmed that the The Warra would be her only run this campaign, given her brief break since the previous preparation and his intention to prime her for an autumn return.
“That will be her done for this preparation,” he said.
“We’ll tip her out, give her another nice break and hopefully in the autumn, I feel like she has got another level to give.
“Her rating will go up. She is a stakes winner now. She came in for one of the two races, and we’ve knocked that off.”
The victory adds to Coyle’s résumé as a dual Group 1 trainer, having previously claimed the 2009 Champagne Stakes with Onemorenomore and the T J Smith with Linky Dink during his Patinack Farm tenure.
