Horse Racing News: Glorious Sydney farewell for Queensland-bound hoop

Heavelon Van Der Hoven produced a fairytale farewell to Sydney racing on Saturday, securing his first NSW metropolitan victory at his final meeting before relocating to Brisbane. The 32-year-old hoop guided the Jim and Greg Lee-trained Glorious Moments ($3.80 equal favourite) to a dominant 4-1/4 length success in The Agency Real Estate Handicap (1300m) at Randwick.

“I wish it happened earlier, but I’m very grateful for the opportunity and to the team for giving me the support that they have here,” Van Der Hoven said after the race. “Hopefully I can stay on him.”

Van Der Hoven revealed he would be happy to travel back to Sydney to partner the promising three-year-old again, with Glorious Moments making it two wins from as many starts this campaign. “He was a bit soft in the run. He didn’t know when to travel and when to relax,” he said. “He is still raw and he’s very exciting. He’s got a good turn of foot which in the future will be a clear advantage.”

The Lee brothers, among Randwick’s longest-serving trainers, prepare Glorious Moments. The pair have a storied history, having previously trained 1983 Caulfield Cup winner Hayai and more recently enjoyed stakes success with horses like Fouardee and Keepin’ The Dream.

Meanwhile, Warwick Farm trainer David Pfieffer has lofty ambitions for consistent mare Oh Diamond Lil ($2.70 favourite), who notched her third win from five starts this preparation with a strong performance in the Mostyn Cooper Handicap (1600m). The four-year-old tracked leader Aberlour ($4.20) throughout before asserting her dominance in the straight to win by two lengths, with the pair putting a sizeable gap on the rest of the field.

Pfieffer said Oh Diamond Lil would enjoy a brief freshen-up before being aimed at better races later this year, with the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford in December among the likely targets. “She has always been a horse who has promised a lot to us. We just had to wait for it,” Pfieffer said. “Ideally, we want to get black type for her down the track somewhere. Imagine her leading around Gosford? It’s five months away but you’ve got to think ahead.”

The trainer also intends to consider interstate options in Melbourne and a potential crack at the Big Dance Wild Card later in the spring.
