Mick Price insists he isn’t overrating Globe by targeting this Saturday’s The Might And Power at Caulfield, but he believes the $1 million Group 1 presents several tactical positives for his gelding.
The seven-year-old son of Charm Spirit was among just nine nominees when entries closed at midday Monday for the 2000-metre weight-for-age contest.
Clashing with proven performers like Treasurethe Moment and Buckaroo is a clear rise from the open handicaps he’s contested this prep, yet Globe profiles as the race’s likely lone leader—exactly the scenario that appeals to Price and co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr.
“That’s the attraction for Globe, that he gets left alone,” Price said.
“He’s not as good as the others, but it doesn’t matter. He’ll bowl along in front, he’ll give plenty of cheek.”
Saturday shapes as Globe’s first crack at Group 1 level and his first appearance in Stakes grade since finishing second-last in April’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m).
He has raced at 2000m only once—last year’s Ballarat Cup—finishing third behind Berkeley Square. This campaign began with a second over 1523m at Moonee Valley on August 23, then a fourth over 1700m at Flemington on September 13, before being collared late by Charterhouse at Sandown on September 27.
Notably, he hasn’t been beaten more than half a length in any of those runs.
Globe is also entered for Rosehill’s $2m Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m), although Price said a trip north would only be entertained if a wet track looked likely. While there’s some early-week rain forecast, the outlook turns fine and sunny through to Saturday.
Stablemate Hezashocka is also among The Might And Power entries, with a start still to be confirmed. Other nominees include Light Infantry Man, Attrition and Kingswood—also in the Hill Stakes—along with Charterhouse and Whisky On The Hill.
The Might And Power headlines a trio of Group 1s at Caulfield on Saturday, alongside the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap, both over 1600m.
