Freedman stable with dual Hareeba Stakes 2022 runners

The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable is hoping for some better luck with La Mexicana who kicks off her latest campaign which is ultimately aimed at a Group 1 contest.

La Mexicana contests the Listed Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington on Saturday with grand plans of tackling the Group 1 Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in May.

Brad Taylor, racing manager for the Freedman father and son training operation, said La Mexicana had a frustrating campaign last spring.

“But she’s had a good break since,” Taylor said.

“We purposefully missed the early part of the autumn with the Sangster in mind.”

A dual stakes race winner, Taylor said the stable was looking at adding some more ‘black type’ to her page before she is retired to the breeding barn.

Taylor said the stable had mapped out a plan to get La Mexicana to Adelaide, with the $500,000 Country Discovery (1100m) at Sale on April 15 the next race in mind.

“There are a few horses heading to Sale, so it would be good to win on Saturday and get her rating up a bit to get into that race,” Taylor said.

“She’s in really good order and her jump-outs have been good, so hopefully she can go and add some more black type to her page.”

Award Winner will join her stablemate in the Saturday’s, although her days are numbered as a racehorse with the breeding barn beckoning.

Award Winner added some all-important ‘black type’ to her record when second in the Listed Bow Mistress Stakes (1200m) at Hobart on February 11.

“It’s a throw at the stumps trying to get a little bit more black type for her page as she’s probably coming to the end of her career now,” Taylor said.

“She’s a nice mare that will make a lovely broodmare, so if we can get some Melbourne black type on her page it might add a bit more value to her.”
