Forgot You is set to make his return to the races at Caulfield this Saturday after another long spell on the sidelines due to injury. The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained galloper lines up in the Thoroughbred Club of Australia Handicap (1400m), marking his first start since March 2024.
Now a rising seven-year-old, Forgot You missed an extended period earlier in his career with a suspensory issue, and this latest setback mirrored that injury, albeit on the opposite leg. During his time off, he was gelded, and co-trainer Natalie Young is eager to see how he performs fresh.
“We took him to Perth in search of a Group 1 in the hope of maybe making him a stallion, but it didn’t quite go to plan,” Young said.
“So, in his lay-off we gelded him.”
As a three-year-old, Forgot You had shown serious promise, winning the Group 2 The Vase at Moonee Valley and contesting the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby, as well as the Caulfield, Australian, and Rosehill Guineas.
Forgot You’s latest injury occurred after a fifth-place finish at Flemington, leading to a rehab program guided by Lee Evison. Since returning to work at Cranbourne, the gelding has impressed in two jumpouts, winning his latest trial on April 28.
“He has trialled up awesome,” Young said.
“He’s dappled from head to toe and just looks fantastic. He’s a little bit pretty because of the time away and we’ve brought him along slowly.
“While Saturday is not his ideal distance, being a 1400 (metres), I can’t fault him on his work and his trials.”
The Winter Championship series, culminating in a rich final at Flemington in July, looms as a potential mid-year target. Young is hopeful that the gelding can work his way through the series and potentially aim up again in spring.
“He’s a Savabeel and likes a bit of cut out of the track and we would like to try and win some prize money with him,” Young said.
“Then if he holds together, we could target something into the spring, but it’s all about getting him back to the races, spacing his races and having him pull up sound after each run.”
