Flying Trapeze may be the outsider in the All-Star Mile at Flemington, but for his connections, it’s a unique opportunity to compete with the likes of Mr Brightside.
Trainer Gary Portelli highlighted the $40,000 guaranteed to the gelding, even if he finishes last in Saturday’s 1600m race.
With only six horses initially paid up for the race, Portelli saw it as a chance to make the most of the situation.
“Who knows, there could be a ‘Steve Bradbury’ situation,” Portelli joked, hoping for an upset result.
The further Flying Trapeze finishes up the order, the bigger the reward, with the winner set to earn $1.5 million.
Portelli’s owners, a large group of ladies, are thrilled to be part of the Group 1 experience, with many still fondly recalling their past involvement with Black Caviar.
“They all love going to the races, they love to get frocked up,” Portelli said, as he looks forward to the big day.
