Punters had it pretty easy last year in the G2 Fillies Classic with Lumosty cruising to victory as the odds-on favourite however; this year’s field of nine is more evenly spread with five of the runners under double-figure odds. Early favourite is My Poppette courtesy of some solid early support ($4.00 into $3.50) from a line of three consisting of Don’t Doubt Mamma, Sempre Libera and Silent Sedation – all at $5.00. With most coming out of what is proving to be a very strong Edward Manifold, punters will have more work harder to find this year’s victor.

1. MY POPPETTE – M Zahra (1)
Not bad in the G2 Guineas Prelude (F) two starts back in a leader dominated race after settling in the second half of the field, holding her ground in the run to the line when seventh (5.2 lengths). Despite settling closer to the lead at her only start since, it was a similar story when third (3.5 lengths) behind Badawiya and Sacred Eye. Good form reference for here last start, will get a sweet run and has an in-form hoop aboard and can be expected to be prominent.
2. AIR APPARENT – M Walker (8)
Led from a wide gate in the G2 Manifold Stakes (1400m) before struggling the final furlong and finishing eighth (5 lengths). She then got home steadily in an Open 3yo Fillies race at Caulfield last week, running fourth (1.7 lengths) to Andrioli. Had every chance last time out and whilst it continued a solid run of performances, she still only has the one win from eleven starts and really would’ve liked to have seen her get the job done last weekend.
3. DON’T DOUBT MAMMA – N Rawiller (6)
Put the writing on the wall with a huge run in the Listed Atlantic Jewel before delivering at her following start, claiming an Open fillies’ race at Caulfield from Sacred Eye by half a length. Her only start since though was a disappointing sixth (4.4 lengths) in the G2 Edward Manifold where she was scrubbed along into the turn and only battled away in the straight. That was her first run over a mile and not the ideal performance you want to see heading into this race but, her stable is an astute one, she has displayed good ability previously, and has the services of Nash Rawiller – could pay to be forgiving.

4. SEEKING ASYLUM – K McEvoy (4)
Put together a fantastic winter preparation on wet tracks, winning four of her five starts, before returning from an eight week let-up with a 2.3 length fifth to Hebden in a BM 75 (1200m). The daughter of Sebring than lined up in a BM 70 where she drew well, found a nice spot in transit just off the pace but after peeling out upon straightening, wasn’t able to improve her position and finished fourth (1.7 lengths) to Cana. Will get another good run here from four for McEvoy but this is a step up again and would probably need a soft track to come into calculations.
5. BENGAL CAT – J McDonald (7)
Specked in betting when making her return to racing in the G2 Edward Manifold Stakes, 20/1 into 16/1, and although caught wide in the run, showed very little in the run home, finishing fourteenth and close to ten lengths from the winner Badawiya. Her previous handful of efforts were promising but couldn’t include her here on what we saw at Flemington last start.
6. SEMPRE LIBERA – D Oliver (9)
The Gai Waterhouse trained galloper was good first up behind Pearls and Honesta in the G2 Tea Rose Stakes (fourth, 2.8 lengths) but only held her position in the G1 Flight Stakes behind Speak Fondly when eighth and again, 2.8 lengths in arrears. Drops in grade here as opposed to many of the others and had shown enough in each of the above runs, plus her last campaign, that despite the awkward draw she is worth plenty of consideration.
7. DAGNY – G Boss (2)
Still searching for her maiden win six starts into her career, with her most recent outing seeing her finishing a well-beaten second (3.8 lengths) in a Ballarat Maiden (1400m). Being a daughter of Darci Brahma, she should be comfortable over the mile, a distance she takes on for the time however, and she is currently eligible for easier races than this.

8. THAMES COURT – J Bowman (5)
Only had the three starts but is showing good promise. Settled in the one/one from an inside draw when contesting an Open 3yo (1400m) at Caulfield and despite being a bit green around the turn and in the straight, stuck on well for third (1.2 lengths) behind Don’t Doubt Mama. She then raced in restricted room and had to ease off the heels of runners just inside the 200m in the Edward Manifold, before closing well under hands and heels riding to finish fifth (4.3 lengths) to Badawiya with Sacred Eye second. Might have jagged a place with any luck last time out and with further improvement to come, rates one to the better hopes here.
9. SILENT SEDITION – C Williams (3)
Filly from Andrew Noblet’s Caulfield stable who, despite still being winless from three starts, is progressed well.
Peeled out from worse than midfield to be the widest runner in a 3yo Fillies race at Caulfield last week but made good ground late and hitting the line well over the 1400m journey to run third (1.3 lengths) to Andrioli. Will continue to improve, shapes up as the mile will suit and by no means the roughest chance in this race.
RACE OVERVIEW –
Plenty here with a genuine hope here as the market suggests. Pace here a bit uncertain with no clear leader but from a midfield gate, thought Thames Court gets the option to be placed to advantage regardless how the field pans out. She was a unlucky not have finished closer last start in the Manifold, only her third race start, and in an open race represents a good value at $9.00. Out of the same race was My Poppette, who’ll get every chance from the inside, and like the way Silent Sedition hit the line last weekend over 1400m, suggesting the mile should be very much to her liking.
