Thoroughbred racing in South Australia has delivered a major financial boost, contributing over $500 million to the state’s economy, according to the latest IER research.
The comprehensive study, which analysed figures from the 2024 financial year, highlighted that racing’s impact in SA continues to expand annually.
The report revealed a total economic contribution of $515.4 million—marking a 14.2% rise on the previous year—and supporting 3,462 full-time equivalent roles across the state.
More than 11,800 individuals are involved in the industry through employment, participation or volunteering, with over 163,000 attendees recorded across 183 thoroughbred race meetings throughout South Australia during the 12-month period.
Racegoer spending provided a significant injection into local businesses—spanning accommodation, hospitality, retail fashion and transport—particularly across regional areas and metropolitan Adelaide.
Support initiatives also continue to play a role in industry wellbeing, with over 500 thoroughbreds assisted through Racing SA’s drought relief support, and 1161 off-the-track care packages issued under the Thorough Care program.
Racing SA Chair Rob Rorrison said the data underlines the crucial economic and social role of racing in the state.
“Thoroughbred racing in South Australia is thriving—not only in terms of growth but also its role in uniting communities and enriching lives across the regions,” Rorrison said.
“This report showcases the positive trajectory of our industry, even before factoring in milestones from the past 18 months, such as the groundbreaking Sportsbet partnership with SAJC and increased prizemoney investments.”
“We remain committed to building on this momentum to benefit both industry participants and the wider community who support and cherish racing in SA.”
