Famous Seamus takes out Group One BTC Cup 2014

Outsider Famous Seamus has produced a late run to claim an upset win in the Group One $400,000 BTC Cup at Doomben.

In a field of seven headlined by triple Group One winner Buffering, Famous Seamus ran on from midfield at the turn to beat Spirit Of Boom on Saturday.

The favourite Buffering, who raced outside the leader, held on for the third after hitting the front before being swamped at the 100m.

Famous Seamus – Ryan Wiggins

Famous Seamus’ victory marked a triumphant return to Brisbane racing for Sydney trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith, 14 years after he trained Landsighting to win the Stradbroke Handicap.

“(Winning today) is a lot better because nobody believed in this horse,” Mayfield-Smith said.

Jockey Ryan Wiggins said Famous Seamus gave him a perfect ride.

“It was unreal, I couldn’t believe how well I was going,” Wiggins said. “Everything was going to plan.

“But credit to the horse. He just did it all for me.”
