Expressway Stakes 2014 day Tips – Randwick racecourse

Randwick is where Sydney racing will take place this Saturday, with the headline event being the $200,000 Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m), which will see the return of some of Sydney’s best, including Boban, Rain Affair and Carlton House.

Race One (13:15) : Adaptra Handicap 1000m Form Guide

Back Me: Law (Best Odds: $2.25) here. Breeders Plate winner back in the Spring who was tipped out immediately after that win with one aim in mind, the Golden Slipper. Trialled twice for this, with the latest resulting in a narrow second to Hampton Court, who ran well at Canterbury during the week. If he is going down that path, he should take care of this lot.
Big Danger: Country Warrior (Best Odds: $3.80) debuts here for Chris Waller off the back of two trial placings, with the most impressive of the two being the first, which saw him run third to the ruling Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper favourite Rubick. Should get the good run off the pace and if there is going to be an upset, it’ll come thanks to this bloke.
Roughie: Hostwin Pegasus (Best Odds: $6.50) has done a few things wrong in his barrier trials, but has shown a touch of quality in each behind some good youngsters. I think he is a next prep horse, but still should run well here.

Race Two (13:50) : Liberty International Underwriters Handicap (81) 2400m Form Guide

Back Me: Boogie Shoes (Best Odds: $7.50) for me. Former UK galloper who has had several runs in Australia under the care of John Sargent. Was okay in a couple of runs in Brisbane during the Winter. Resumed on Boxing Day and in two subsequent runs, he has steadily made progress, and I loved the way he chipped away last week behind Junoob. Crying out for 2400m and strikes a very winnable race.
Big Danger: Rule Book (Best Odds: $3.50) has also had three runs back from a break and has shown plenty himself. Looked the winner last time out at Warwick Farm, but was just gunned down late by Celtic Prince, whom he meets better at the weights here. Should roll along in front and prove hard to beat.
Roughie: The last time Sainthood (Best Odds: $21.00) won a race, I think Saddam Hussein was still on the loose. He has had three runs now back from a break, and did trial extremely well prior to that first up run. He has been ok at each outing, and did work home well late last week behind Junoob.

Race Three (14:25) : Klink Handicap (74) 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: Agadir (Best Odds: $2.10) on top. He was so impressive at his two runs back from a break, blitzing them first up at Kembla then was the subject of a decent betting plunge at Warwick Farm, and after doing work sitting wide with no cover, he kicked hard in the straight and drew away late. He then raced here last week and was held up for the early part of the straight, before cutting back to the inside and running on late. Some say he was disappointing, but he looks to be a horse who needs clear air and prefers to be outside horses. Creeping up in the weights, but gee he looks promising.
Big Danger: Hot Albert (Best Odds: $9.00) was given a pumper special at Canterbury last time out, beating home Fine Bubbles, who was also given a peach ride by Bowman, who rides Hot Albert here from the inside gate. He took a while to win one, but has now won consecutive races, so his confidence is sky high.
Roughie: Vilanova (Best Odds: $13.00) has been a major disappointment this time in, and despite bad luck last time out, he was still plain in the straight. Nash jumps on now, so this is his last chance to show something.

Race Four (15:00) : Seven News Handicap (80) 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: Charge Account (Best Odds: $3.30) made his debut for David Vandyke over the 1100m here and was good late, but from a punting point of view, as a $2.70 favourite, he was a touch disappointing. He is second up here after a long spell, so that is a concern, but on potential, he is the best horse in the race, and from barrier one with Shinn on board, we’ll go his way.
Big Danger: Mr Jackman (Best Odds: $4.60) did all the work last start, sitting with no cover, yet hit the lead 300m and looked to be kicking well enough to hold on, only to be gunned down late by Define, a filly regarded as Group 1 material, so that should hold up quite nicely for a race like this.
Roughie: Earnest Ernest (Best Odds: $15.00) had no luck at all in that race Charge Account contested, sitting near last on the fence and never really getting a clear crack at them in the straight. His trial was good, and the first up run confirms that he has returned in excellent order and a win isn’t too far away.

Race Five (15:35) : Nelune Foundation Handicap (85) 1400m Form Guide

Back Me: Plenty to like about Our Desert Warrior (Best Odds: $2.70) for Gai Waterhouse and Nash Rawiller. Showed great promise during the Spring, with the highlight being a close third to Rain Drum and Centennial Park in the Shannon Stakes. He is definitely a sneaky lightweight chance for the Doncaster provided his rating allows it, so to go down that path, he needs to win these races, and I’m confident he will.
Big Danger: Almighty Charge (Best Odds: $3.50) showed plenty of ticker to get the job done over this track/distance last start, beating home Specific Choice (cringe when I even write that horses name). Has to rise a touch in class and depth here, but maps very well and looks the lone threat to his stablemate.
Roughie: Asclepius (Best Odds: $26.00) resumed from a Spring campaign with an eye catching third in a small field at Canberra. Go on his previous form where he ran behind the likes of Salon Soldier, Mouro and Mulilateral. Look for him to run on late.

Race Six (16:12) : Expressway Stakes 1200m Form Guide

Back Me: The value in this race certainly lies with Carlton House (Best Odds: $15.00). Forget his run last year in the Ajax because he hadn’t settled into Australia properly. He has been given plenty of time, and it looks as if it has paid off based on how well he has trialled and his exhibition gallops, in particular his latest outing where he worked with Fiorente and went as well, if not better than him. Best form is over further, but class wise, there isn’t many better in Australia.
Big Danger: I rate Boban (Best Odds: $2.70) as the best horse in Australia at the moment, but from what I saw in his barrier trial, he is nowhere near as forward as Carlton House is for this race. Yes, he has a devastating turn of foot, but he has bigger fish to fry. I still think he is a massive threat, but looks rock bottom odds for a horse who appears as though he’ll need the run under the belt.
Roughie: Sizzling (Best Odds: $14.00) didn’t have much luck during the Spring, in particular in the Epsom when a most unlucky seventh to Boban, beaten just under two lengths. The key to him is the wide barrier, which is what he needs desperately, and a big track like Randwick, fresh…great value chance.

Race Seven (16:47) : Eatability Handicap 1600m Form Guide

Back Me: I found this to be a two horse race between Lightinthenite (Best Odds: $6.00) and Red Excitement. Leaning towards the former given he has the class edge and is an absolute bomb when produced fresh. His last two fresh runs have resulted in a fourth in the Ajax and a third to Hawkspur and Beaten Up in the Chelmsford, so back to an open handicap here looks just a perfect starting point for a quality animal.
Big Danger: Red Excitement (Best Odds: $3.80) has been the find in recent weeks, putting up two massive efforts to win. Had no right to win here two back when last in a slowly run race, then last week at Rosehill he was wide with no cover, midfield, yet surged to the lead close to home and was getting away from them. The problem is that Avdulla is not riding, and he knows the horse so well, so that’s the concern with him, but he is racing too well to dismiss.
Roughie: Scottish Border (Best Odds: $41.00) certainly shouldn’t be $67 in betting here. His two runs back since campaigning in Melbourne have been very good. Worked home strongly in that infamous race at Kensington where Number One Gun went like Vo Rogue in front. He then raced over this track/distance and got a touch far back and worked home well late when a close up seventh to Jacquinot Bay, who ran well last Saturday. 3kg under the minimum and a decent barrier…Definitely have a little something each way.

Race Eight (17:22) : Gifts.com.au Handicap (80) 1300m Form Guide

Back Me: We said it last time, but now it is definitely D-Day now for Recoinage (Best Odds: $10.00). Four very good runs back from a break, and has steadily gotten better at each outing. Just failed to get Caprossa at Warwick Farm, then didn’t get much room in the straight when fourth to Champagne Cath. With even luck, and a genuine tempo, she’ll prove hard to beat.
Big Danger: Nothing wrong with the win of Caprossa (Best Odds: $13.00) at Warwick Farm when beating Recoinage, fending off all of her challengers up the straight to hold on gamely. She then sat outside Champagne Cath at Randwick and looked to have her chance, but was beaten by the better horse on the day. The claim for Ichikawa is ideal, drawn nicely and there is no reason why she can’t continue her good form.
Roughie: There is plenty to like about this mare from Nowra, Shanina (Best Odds: $34.00). She takes a little time to balance up, but once she hits the straight, she lets down with a beautiful turn of foot. She’ll start attractive odds, but there is no reason why she can’t win this.
