Exciting filly Agarwood maintained her perfect record with another strong front-running victory at Randwick, prompting connections to weigh up her next move—whether it be in Queensland this winter or saved for the spring.
After a smart debut win at Warwick Farm over 1000m, Agarwood stepped up in both distance and class to dominate Saturday’s Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1200m) under Adam Hyeronimus.
Although nominated for the J J Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm next month, Tulloch Lodge representative Neil Paine believes the more likely option is the Oxlade Stakes (1200m), or a spell with an eye on spring targets.
“We’ll see how she comes through the run,” Paine said. “Heavy tracks can take a toll on young horses, but she did it easily today. Adam gave her a peach of a ride and she was strong to the line.”
Paine highlighted Agarwood’s physical development, noting she is a small-framed filly who has taken time to strengthen, and that the spring could present better opportunities as she matures further.
“She was quite small early on, so we gave her time to strengthen. That patience is paying off now, and she’ll only improve after a break,” he added.
Sent out a $1.95 favourite, Agarwood scored by 2.25 lengths from Matima ($10), with Providence ($31) running on well for third. Stablemate Regulated Affair ($8) followed just behind.
Chris Waller’s team is also considering Queensland options for Providence and Regulated Affair. Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth confirmed Providence is aimed at The Phoenix (1500m) on Oaks Day before a possible J J Atkins tilt, while Regulated Affair also holds a nomination for the Group 1 race.
