Paddy’s Gem hit the spotlight when she defeated Black Caviar’s little sister Belle Couture on debut in December.

Now a four-year-old, Paddy’s Gem has not won since she rolled the $2.6 million yearling in a Bendigo maiden but her trainer Greg Eurell is convinced his charge will eventually succeed in town.

Paddy’s Gem was placed three times in four metropolitan outings last season but Eurell says a rise to 1400 metres in Saturday’s David Christopher & Joan Walker Handicap at Flemington on Saturday could be the catalyst for a city victory.

“It will be interesting over the 1400 metres because both her runs have suggested that distance would be the right way to go with her,” Eurell said.

“She’s always shown that she would make city class and natural improvement will give her a chance to become a genuine metropolitan mare.”

The Danerich mare has worked home well at her two runs at 1200 metres this time in but rises 2.5kg on her last start second to Jemerica at Caulfield on July 26.

However, Eurell believes Paddy’s Gem is nicely weighted with 54kg in the Rating 84 contest while drawing barrier seven has helped her chances.

“She’s ticking over all right and her two runs this time in have been really solid,” Eurell said.

“She’s drawn nicely with no weight so she has a great opportunity to see if the can run the 1400 right out and if she does that, she has a chance.”

Meanwhile, Eurell has welcomed the promising Hosting back into his Cranbourne stable after recovering from a fractured humerus.

Hosting was stakes placed twice during his three-year-old season but pulled up lame after an unplaced run at Caulfield in April.
