Emirates Stakes day 2013 – Laing caps big week with Group Three win

Two-year-old Boomwaa has capped a big Melbourne Cup week for trainer Robbie Laing with a dominant win in the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate.

Laing, who won the $1.5 million Victoria Derby with Polanski last Saturday, continued his impressive record with juveniles during Cup week when Boomwaa took out the 1000m straight-track race at Flemington.

The victory by Boomwaa made it back-to-back Maribyrnong Plate wins for Laing after Direct Charge was successful 12 months ago.

It also continued Laing’s run of success in juvenile races during the Melbourne Cup carnival.

In 2011 the Laing-trained Andre Roo Hoo was second in the Maribyrnong Plate, while in the two years before that he prepared Spectrolite and She’s Got Gears for Listed wins during the four-day carnival.

Boomwaa ($6.50) was having his third start after finishing third on debut at Flemington last month and fourth in a race on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley.

“They’ve got to be tough at my joint or they can get out,” Laing said.

The Mutawaajid gelding bounced to the front and never relinquished that position, surging clear to defeat Lockroy ($5.50) by three lengths with favourite Silent Whisper ($4.60) another long head away third.

“His fitness and race experience was to the fore today. He has absolutely bolted in,” Laing said.

“We’ve had a great week winning the Derby and now a Group Three race.

“This bloke will be a nice horse over 1400 metres and a mile. He covers a lot of ground.”

Boomwaa, a $43,000 yearling purchase, is being aimed at the Inglis Classic in Sydney early next year.
