Duric, Mourinho to defend Australian Stakes title

Vlad Duric will chase a second Australia Stakes with Mourinho before taking up a short-term Singapore contract.

Duric will ride the gelding in the Group Two sprint at Moonee Valley on January 23 before taking up a two-month Singapore licence, starting on February 1.

He first teamed with Mourinho in last year’s Australia Stakes and has been on the gelding’s back in his seven subsequent starts.

They combined for a further three wins including the Group One Underwood Stakes last spring.

Mourinho hasn’t raced since finishing 12th to Winx in the Cox Plate in October.

Duric’s Singapore stint will be his second after riding there from 2009 to 2012.

He rode 214 winners, finishing second to champion jockey Joao Moreira in the 2010 and 2011 premierships.

“It’s super competitive in Singapore at the moment and I’m going over at a good time,” Duric said.

“I had a lot of success when I was there last time and I know I’m going to be in for a lot of hard work.

“But I’m prepared to put my head down, bum up, and hopefully ride as many winners as I can.”

Duric joins fellow jockey Danny Beasley in a return to Singapore.

He is due to start his stint at the same time as Duric.

They join Corey Brown, John Powell and Michael Rodd as Australian jockeys riding in Singapore.
