Doveton Stakes 2013 – Tips

The return to racing of smart duo Loveyamadly and Chase The Rainbow will be focal points for the Doveton Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday. Both resume from long spells but each has built an impressive record from their limited number of races. Loveyamadly heads the market at $4.00 whilst Chase The Rainbow is $10.00. In a competitive race, Sumakaray ($4.60), Vatican ($5.50) and Rescue Mission ($8.00) are the other runners under double figures.

Doveton Stakes Form Guide

1. CHASE THE RAINBOW – D Dunn (8) 60kgs

Returning of an enforced lay-off of fifteen months, this now 5yo will create plenty of interest. He showed plenty of promise as a 3yo and claimed the G2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) as one of his three wins from his first five starts. He has been prepped for his return with two barrier trials, the latest of which was an impressive 2 ¾ length win at Cranbourne. Looked very good winning the trial and despite the big weight and wider gate first up, would not dismiss his chances.

2. VATICAN – W Egan (6) 60kgs

Just found Canali too strong two starts back in a 1000m race at Moonee Valley before, a fortnight ago over the same track and trip, running second again this time to Esprit De Bullet by ¾ of a length when carrying 60kgs. His last three starts at this track all read well and include a fourth (3.3 lengths) behind Unpretentious and Pago Rock in the G2 Schillaci Stakes earlier this campaign. Will track the speed and get his chance but some concern over the 60kgs in this class over the final stages.

3. ZEDI KNIGHT – C Symons (7) 59kgs

The now 9yo resumes off a twenty-one week spell. He hasn’t had any barrier trials in readiness for his return but that is generally the procedure. His first up record is not flash and now, being another year older, he’ll more than likely need this run.

4. LOVEYAMADLY – D Smith (5) 58.5kgs

A smart mare who has built a record of six wins from ten starts, including the Listed Abell Stakes earlier this year We haven’t seen the Mick Price trained mare on the track since April but she’s won two from three (ran a close second in the other) when resuming from a spells. Drawn well to get a nice run in the race, hasn’t missed a place in five starts at this distance and no surprise to see her price kept well guarded in early markets.

5. RESCUE MISSION – R Maloney (4) 57kgs

Just missed claiming the Rubiton Stakes (1100m) earlier this year when nosed out by Adebisi before running a credible seventh in the G1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m). He spent the winter in Darwin under the care of Michael Hickmott where the Darci Brahma gelding had two unsuccessful runs, before returning to the Anthony Freedman Stables who prepares him for his return to racing off an eighteen week spell. No trials to go on but wouldn’t let the Northern Territory form be a distraction.

6. UNDENIABLY – S Baster (9) 57kgs

Put together a very good campaign when last in work which coincidentally, commenced with an eye-catching second in this race last year and went on to include fourth placings in both the G1 Oakleigh Plate and G1 Newmarket Handicap. His form this time in however, is well off the mark of those efforts and the 7yo by Fastnet Rock is struggling. He ran tenth of fourteen last start in the Listed Earl Gray Stakes (1000m) behind Lankan Rupee when beaten 5.5 lengths. That was the closest he has got to a winner this time in and just can’t have him here.

7. SUMAKARAY – M Walker (2) 54kgs

Had a sweet run, but the winner an even sweeter one still, when ¾ length second to Liesele in the Listed Alinghi Stakes before a strong on-pace effort up the Flemington straight saw the Brian Cox trained mare run fourth (2.1 lengths) behind Dystopia in the G3 Mumm Stakes. Had to carry 60kgs at her next and most recent start and again was honest, running third behind Coronation Street, whom she gave 5.5kgs to, when third ¾ length over 1200m at Moonee Valley. A return to this distance suits, as does the draw and weight conditions of this race which sees her allocated a much more manageable 54kgs.

8. FLASH OF DOUBT – G Boss (3) 54kgs

Snuck home along the fence, as 20/1 shot, when third (beaten a neck) behind the in-form Catkins in the G3 Sportingbet (1200m) a handful of starts back but her runs since, which have seen her unplaced in five starts, would suggest she’s likely to struggle here. Generally gets back and will have a lot of work to do from her inside draw if she is to run some of these down.

9. HALLE ROCKS – D Oliver (10) 54kgs

Has split her four runs this time in between Victoria and Adelaide with the pick of them being her victory at Morphettville Park three starts back in a RST 86 (1000m). Her last start saw the Fastnet Rock mare run third (beaten 3 ¾ lengths) behind Essay Raider in a BM 90 (1100m). Has had a dip at this grade a few times in the past and been well accounted for in each attempt. Would expect that would be the case here again, especially from the widest gate.

10. VICARIO – D Moor (1)

Resumes of an eighteen week spell for trainer Mick Price (his third runner in the race – Loveyamadly, Halle Rocks). The Hard Spun 4yo progressed to be an Open class winner last prep but this is a step up again and would have to have shown improvement – which is possible, from her break. Inside gate in a scamper may not be an advantage as she generally gets back and would be happy to see what she produces first up.

RACE OVERVIEW

Needless to say there will be no loafing here. Think Loveyamadly has drawn perfectly in five. She’ll be able to tag the speed early and be produced at the right time as they turn. Sumakaray is racing in career best form and whilst she may need a touch of luck from two, will be more than capable if given the chance. Walker has ridden her three times for two wins and a second. Rescue Mission the blowout chance. Form earlier this year for a race such as this was first rate. If he can reproduce that first up, he’ll make the $8.00 on offer look a very good price.
