News:

English’s win in the Doomben 10,000 has Gai Waterhouse a step closer to joining her late father Tommy Smith as the trainer of all Queensland’s Group One races.

Smith dominated winter carnivals for years winning 33 races which are now Group One in Brisbane – Queensland Derby (12), Queensland Oaks (8), Doomben 10,000 (6), Doomben Cup (3), Stradbroke (2) and J J Atkins (1).

There was no Group One Tatt’s Tiara or Group One Kingsford Smith Cup when Smith trained but he did win races that were then Group One, the Brisbane Cup (6) and QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (5).

Waterhouse has now won six of the Group One races in Brisbane with the Stradbroke Handicap and Queensland Derby to come.

Her Group One winners are Doomben 10,000 (English), Doomben Cup (Juggler, Pornichet), Queensland Oaks (Zacheline), J J Atkins (Romantic Touch, Almalad), BTC Cup-Kingsford Smith Cup (Bentley Biscuit), and Tatt’s Tiara (Cosmic Endeavour).

Waterhouse now trains in partnership with Adrian Bott who is full of admiration for her.

“Gai is a wonder and keeps on producing top class horses,” he said.

Despite her second Group One win, English is at $11 for both the Kingsford Smith Cup on May 26 and the G1 Stradbroke Handicap two weeks later.

Le Romain, third in the 10,000 is the $3.80 favourite for the Kingsford Smith while runner-up Impending is the $8 second favourite to defend the Stradbroke Handicap behind his Godolphin stablemate Osborne Bulls.
