The Doomben 10,000 was originally run in 1933 as the Doomben Newmarket Handicap, before becoming the Doomben 10,000 in 1947.  This event has been known by a few different names over the years, and was known as the Rothmans 10,000 from 1980-1989, the Castlemaine 10,000 between 1990-1992, the Doomben 10,000 again between 1993-2000, the Treasury Casino 10,000 in 2001, and back to the Doomben 10,000 in 2002.

The race distance of this event has also changed a few times over the years, from 6 furlongs in 1934 to 7 furlongs in 1942 and 1350 metres in 1973 with the advent of the metric system.  Originally a Principal Race, the Doomben 10,000 became a Group 1 event in 1980.  While it is mostly local talent competing in the Doomben 10,000, a number of notable horses have been victorious here over the years.

Some of the big names to have won this event include Bernborough in 1946, Baguette in 1971, Manikato in 1979, Takeover Target in 2007, and Apache Cat in 2008 and 2009.  Other than Apache Cat, other double winners of the Doomben 10,000 include Black Onyx in 1969-1970, Prince Trialia in 1990-1991, and Falvelon in 2001-2002.  In recent years, winners of this event include Hot Danish in 2010, Beaded in 2011, Sea Siren in 2012, and Epaulette in 2013.

The race record for the Doomben 10,000 under its current distance was set by Falvelon in 2001 with a time of 1:17.21 and Tipperary Star in 1963 in 1:17 1/5.  Jockey George Moore holds the record for the most wins, taking out this event on five separate occasions in 1940, 1953, 1957, 1969, 1971.  Famous trainer T.J Smith managed to win the Doomben 10,000 six times, with his victories spanning four decades in 1955, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1982, 1985.

News:

Trainer Gary Portelli admitted he was devastated when his galloper Rebel Dane drew a wide barrier for the Doomben 10,000 on Saturday.

Portelli had been hoping Rebel Dane, who had been ruling favourite, would have drawn barriers one to five in the Group One sprint.

Instead he will start from gate 10 in the 11-horse field.

“He will have to go back and then be ridden for luck. I thought from an inside barrier he would have been able to get a nice position behind the pace,” Portelli said.

“Now he will need luck especially if the track keeps playing the way it was last week which suited leaders.

“If you get back and they don’t go at a cracking pace it is very hard to run those type of horses down.”

Portelli poured cold water on a suggestion he might instruct jockey Glen Boss to let race favourite Buffering, who is drawn barrier eight, take him across the field.

“Why would I do that? He will end up three and four deep. He will have to go back in the field.”

Rebel Dane arrived in Brisbane earlier this week and Portelli has given him an easy time after a trip which was punctuated by several unplanned stops.

One form reference to hearten Portelli is that Rebel Dane is following exactly the same successful path as last year’s 10,000 winner Epaulette.

The Darley galloper ran a disappointing sixth in the Randwick All Aged Stakes but then won a trial in good fashion before going on to take the 10,000.

Rebel Dane ran a disappointing fifth in the All Aged Stakes but then won a Rosehill trial last week.

The California Dane gelding is one of several horses who failed in the All Aged Stakes after running on a bog track in the TJ Smith Stakes on April 12.

Win or lose on Saturday Rebel Dane will remain in Brisbane for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap on June 7.

“I think the distance and the bigger straight will suit him.”

Rebel Dane has already won in Group One company over 1400m, taking out last year’s Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.
