Distance test for Taddei Tondo at Moonee Valley 6/6/2015

Consistent galloper Taddei Tondo will be stepping into unchartered waters when he runs at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Taddei Tondo lines-up in the Cafetto Clean Handicap (1509m) at what will be his first attempt at a race longer than 1400m.

And the performance of the son of Danerich will determine whether he stays in training or heads to the paddock.

Taddei Tondo will be contesting his ninth race this campaign and will be ridden by trainer Gerard Moloney’s son Patrick, the in-form apprentice who sits in fourth spot on the jockeys’ premiership table after a treble at Moonee Valley last week.

“I don’t think he’s a spring horse so if he’s okay after this we’ll probably keep him racing, otherwise he will go to the paddock and come back at the end of the spring,” Moloney said.

Taddei Tondo competed during last year’s spring carnival and was a narrow second to Hosting at Listed level before finishing less than four lengths from Hucklebuck in Group Three grade at Flemington on Derby day.

Both runs were over 1400m and Moloney is taking the punt that Saturday’s extra distance won’t pose any problem.

“This is the furthest he’s stepped out to but it seems a suitable race,” Moloney said.

“It’s an 84 rating race and a lot of the races he’s been running in have been open races.

“He’s a Listed placed horse and is one of those horses that just needs a little bit of luck.

“He probably should have run second at his last start but he got stuck on the inside and he needs a bit of galloping room.”

While Moloney and his brother John have separate training licences and race horses under their own names, they train as a team and will also start Seattleite in Taddei Tondo’s race.

The Moloneys also have last Saturday’s Moonee Valley winner Act Of Valour in the Essendon Nissan Handicap (1600m).

“He’s trained on really well and looks in top order,” Gerard Moloney said.
