As he sends stable star Better Than Ready for a summer break, trainer Kelly Schweida is looking to classy mare Discreet to step up over the next few weeks.

She resumes racing at Eagle Farm on Saturday with Schweida plotting a course towards the Magic Millions carnival in January.

Discreet will run in the Travel Associates Classic (1200m) but Schweida has yet to confirm a rider although Chris Munce and Ric McMahon, who have both won on the mare, will be considered.

Although Discreet finished only sixth of eight runners in an 850m barrier trial at Doomben on November 12, Schweida defended her performance.

“She doesn’t do much without blinkers on and she’s big and fat this time in so we purposely didn’t want to do much with her,” Schweida said.

The daughter of Show A Heart has yet to win first-up but Schweida still expects her to be highly competitive on Saturday.

“It mightn’t show up in the stats but two of her wins were coming off let-ups of eight weeks so she does go well fresh,” he said.

All going well after the Classic, Discreet will progress to the Just Now Quality (1350m) at Doomben on December 14.

Schweida said Discreet would then race at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve before her main goal this campaign, the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Classic (1300m) at the Gold Coast on January 11.

Following his second win this month, stablemate Better Than Ready will have a short break before being set for the Group One Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield in February.

Cape Kidnappers, meanwhile, has trained on well since his close second to Heart Testa at Rosehill on November 16 and will have his next start in the Group Three George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday week.

“They didn’t run along like we thought they would in that race and when they sprinted they put a length-and-a-half on him,” he said.

“Another 20 metres he probably picks them up and the winner is no slouch.”

Ascot Handicap winner Doubtfilly will clash with Discreet on Saturday after trainer Stuart Kendrick scratched her from Saturday’s Keith Noud Handicap at Eagle Farm won by Better Than Ready.

“She drew a bad gate in the Keith Noud and I thought it was best to hold off for another week,” Kendrick said.

“She’s going to have to carry more weight against her own sex but she won’t have to run into horses like Better than Ready and it looks a better option for her.”
