Dawnie Perfect to back up in Gold Coast Bracelet

Trainer Clarry Conners has no qualms about a seven-day back-up for Dawnie Perfect as she continues her Oaks campaign in in the Group Three Gold Coast Bracelet.

Dawnie Perfect was 12th behind Cylinder Beach in the Gunsynd Classic at Doomben last Saturday but Conners said she took little harm out of the run.

“She only got beaten about four lengths and her jockey didn’t knock her around,” Conners said.

“Her run was much better than it looks on paper.”

He said the filly needed another run to get her ready for later in the carnival.

Dawnie Perfect is raced by her breeders, Conners’s long-time client John Singleton who also raced the filly’s dam, 2003 Queensland Oaks winner Zagalia.

“She is by Big Brown who is getting staying horses out of an Oaks winner so I am really looking forward to getting Dawnie Perfect to a genuine staying trip,” Conners said.

“She won the Group Three Ethereal Stakes in Melbourne during the spring and then was a good fourth in the Wakeful Stakes in the lead-up to the VRC Oaks.

“But she got a minor hoof infection before the Oaks and I had to scratch.”

Conners said Dawnie Perfect reminded him of Zagalia who along with 2006 winner Allow has given him two wins in the Queensland Oaks.

“Once they get past 2000 metres she will be well suited,” he said.

Conners will also have Queen Of Wands in the Bracelet. She impressed when a fast-finishing second in the Princess Stakes (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago.

“On her breeding you wouldn’t think Queen of Wands would get the Oaks distance. You can get fooled sometimes by horses who get back in the field and run on,” he said.

“But she gives every indication she will get at least 2000 metres.

Dawnie Perfect and Queen Of Wands will both press on to the Doomben Roses on May 21 and, all being well, the Oaks.
