Lucky Tom’s return to winning form will not tempt his trainer to take him back to Melbourne this spring.

After two unlucky seconds, Lucky Tom won the Racezone Hcp (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.

His Gold Coast trainer Harold Norman has always rated Lucky Tom as potentially the best horse he has trained in a long career.

He took the gelding to Melbourne last spring where he was unsuccessful in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and the main event.

“He won’t be going back this spring,” Norman said.

“Lucky Tom just wasn’t at his best last year in Melbourne but I do think he is a stakes horse.”

“I will give him a break now and then a short campaign in the summer. But what we are really looking at is the Brisbane winter next year.”

Norman believes a race such as the Group One Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m would be perfect for Lucky Tom.

He said the Stradbroke was often won by light weight horses racing near the lead, the pattern of Lucky Tom.

Lucky Tom has won about $160,000 in prize money and will need to win some top races to make the Stradbroke field.

Norman was also full of praise for apprentice Rikki Jamieson who won on Lucky Tom.

“She has been with me the whole way through and is Lucky Tom’s regular rider,” he said.

“For someone who is linked with a small stable like mine she has a great strike-rate.”

“She should get plenty of chances with a two-kilogram claim this season.”
