Dances On Stars claims Carrington Stakes 2014

Another Listed race is on the radar for Dances On Stars following his breakthrough stakes win at Randwick on Wednesday.

Trainer Gerald Ryan diverted from his usual practice and sent the four-year-old fresh into the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) without a barrier trial.

The method worked with Dances On Stars ($4) charging late to beat Hidden Warrior ($12) by a short neck with Dee`n’Gee ($7.50) another half neck third.

“He is a genuine Group Three type of horse,” Ryan said.

“I’ll look at the Canterbury Classic at the Friday night meeting in a couple of weeks.

“I want to keep him to 1100 metres and the races will only get stronger from now on so he’s back at the right time of the year.”

Dances On Stars had been stakes placed on five previous occasions, four times in races won by Sizzling including when second in the Queensland Guineas in June.

He was spelled after finishing sixth in the Civic Stakes won by Mic Mac in July.

“He’s not a big horse so we gave him a good break,” Ryan said.

“I was a bit worried in the race because they weren’t going that quick. He went for three runs and I thought he was going to be desperately unlucky.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen him push right through horses so that was the really pleasing part of the race.

“He’s a lovely little horse and it’s great for him to get a stakes win.”

Zaratone ($9.50) took up his customary front-running role but had nothing left in the straight when the challengers came and finished last of the seven runners, just behind the $2.30 favourite Heart Testa who never recovered after missing the start.

Hidden Warrior’s options are the $100,000 Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford on Friday week or the $200,000 Magic Millions Sprint at the Gold Coast a day later.
