Dance placegetters in hunt for The Five Diamonds 2025 consolation

The runners who chased home Gringotts in the Big Dance could back up quickly for a shot at another rich payday, with Ciaron Maher paying up for both Vivy Air and Lugh in Saturday’s $2 million Five Diamonds at Rosehill.

The pair completed Maher’s remarkable stable trifecta in Tuesday’s feature, and assistant trainer Jo Gerard-Dubord said both horses will be assessed throughout the week before a final call is made.

Vivy Air is no stranger to backing up, having won the Big Dance Wild Card earlier this spring before finishing second in the Big Dance for the second year running.

“She is tough,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“She is very chilled, she eats well and handles her work. The rise to 1800 metres will suit her and mares in form are always dangerous.”

Lugh, meanwhile, ran boldly on pace in the Big Dance at only his ninth career start, continuing a comeback after spending 15 months off the track following the Super Impose Stakes in 2023.

“He had to roll forward and do some work, and he fought all the way,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“He’s lightly raced and keeps improving. He deserves his chance.”

The Five Diamonds field is headlined by Queensland star Transatlantic, while international interest arrives via William Haggas-trained Bullet Point, to be ridden by Cieren Fallon — the same combination who won last year’s Golden Eagle.
