The Tom Dabernig stable is preparing a three-pronged assault on the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield this Saturday, with mares Cleo Cat, Romantic Choice and Fickle all set to line up.

Leading the charge is Cleo Cat, who is undefeated this preparation, having most recently scored in the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. Dabernig reported the mare has continued to thrive since that performance, working strongly on a rain-affected course proper at Warrnambool during the week.

“She’s done everything right post-Adelaide,” Dabernig said. “She galloped well on a Soft 6 on Tuesday and hasn’t missed a beat. It’s a solid race but she’s in top order.”

Romantic Choice, meanwhile, is looking to rediscover her early-season form after two unplaced runs. Dabernig remains optimistic, noting the mare’s past win over Group 1 Oakleigh Plate placegetter She’s Bulletproof as evidence of her talent.

“She was unlucky first-up and didn’t handle the conditions in the Wangoom,” he said. “She’s had a quiet jump-out and went nicely without being pushed, so I’m confident she can bounce back.”

Fickle, returning from a break, rounds out the trio. The lightly raced daughter of I Am Invincible has won four of her seven starts since transferring to Dabernig and is chasing valuable Black Type this campaign.

“She didn’t perform at Sandown last start, but I feel tracks like Caulfield suit her better as an on-pace runner,” Dabernig said. “She’s had three trials and is sound. We’re happy with how she’s come on.”

The Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes and Bletchingly Stakes are likely next targets if all goes well this weekend.
