Country Cups on agenda for Hardbreak Hotel

A middle distance campaign, starting with a possible country Cups bid, is one of many options trainer Guy Walter has in mind for in-form galloper Hardbreak Hotel.

Hardbreak Hotel made it two wins from his past three starts despite sitting wide in the Comfort Inn Hunts Liverpool Handicap (1600m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

In a desperate finish, Hardbreak Hotel ($13) lasted to beat Mr Edison ($19) by a nose with Sienna Red ($5.50) a half-length away third.

“I think he could be a 2000-metre horse,” Walter said.

“The way he fought on to win makes you think he will get over more ground.”

Walter, who is enjoying a purple patch of form, is eyeing-off major country Cups for the five-year-old.

“There’s the Albury Cup and also the Canberra Cup coming up so that’s something to think about,” Waller said.

“Or he might go for a spell because he’s done a fantastic for the owners.”

Hardbreak Hotel was trapped deep without cover but jockey Nathan Berry said he was happy for the gelding to cover additional ground.

“He was content out there so I made sure I didn’t use him up. He travelled that well that once he turned for home I was sure he would win,” he said.

In spite of Berry’s confidence, Hardbreak Hotel had to survive a late challenge from Mr Edison who made his run between horses to make it close in a deceptive finish.

Thumbtacks started favourite at $5 in a wide betting race and was given every chance by Hugh Bowman before finishing sixth.

On the back of sunny skies, stewards upgraded the Warwick Farm track to a good rating after the race.
