Cosmic Crusader has concluded a stellar campaign with a historic victory in the Cox Plate at Flemington, solidifying his position among Australia’s racing elite after rising from Western Australian prominence.
This year’s 2026 $6 million Group 1 Cox Plate, the first to be held at Flemington due to Moonee Valley’s reconstruction, saw the six-year-old gelding deliver trainer Andrea Leek and jockey William Pike their inaugural major race wins.
Despite a fourth-place finish as the favourite in the preceding Caulfield Cup (2400m), the tenacious gelding produced a winning run over the 2040m distance, surpassing Chris Waller’s runners, Birdman and Aeliana, in front of a large crowd of 34,617.
The significant achievement visibly moved the usually stoic jockey William Pike, who allowed himself an uncharacteristic display of jubilation as he crossed the finish line.
“I don’t ever dream of winning these races, because it’s always too far to reach,” Pike expressed.
“I had in my mind over the line, I’m not much of a saluter, I’m like ‘don’t salute, don’t salute’ and then the moment gets the better of you and you stand up and you salute and you carry on.”
“It’s amazing, it’s infectious. (There’s a) big crowd, an iconic day – most likely the only ever Cox Plate to be run here – so it’s nice that we get to etch our name in there.”
Cosmic Crusader, sent off at $9.50, achieved his 12th career victory from 24 starts, defeating Birdman ($11) by three-quarters of a length. Aeliana, the $4.20 favourite, finished a head further back in third.
Ceolwulf, a visitor from Sydney, claimed fourth place. He, like Cosmic Crusader, was also competing on a short back-up after finishing second in the King Charles III Stakes. Sir Delius ($5), the long-time market leader, could only manage sixth.
Andrea Leek, who took over Cosmic Crusader’s training from Michael Grantham in Perth, who prepared him for last year’s Group 1 Northerly Stakes win, has guided him through a remarkable seven-start Victorian campaign. This season commenced with a Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) victory on July 25 and progressed through wins in the Turnbull Stakes (Group 1, 2000m) and P B Lawrence Stakes (Group 2, 1400m), along with Group 1 placings in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Underwood Stakes (1800m), and his Caulfield Cup fourth.
Leek, a former successful jumps jockey, indicated she recognised the horse’s potential for top-tier races after his initial Victorian outing.
“He wasn’t over the distance that he needed to be at that stage, what he was doing then was extraordinary,” she said of the Bletchingly Stakes triumph.
“He’s just an iron horse and he has just got better and better and better.”
“What a champion. What a ride by Willie Pike. Thanks to the Peters’ for giving him to me and trusting in me.
“I’ve said before, I feel like I’m an imposter. To step in and have a horse like this in the early stages of my career, I’m very lucky. I couldn’t be happier.”
With Cosmic Crusader’s dominant Cox Plate performance, racing odds on Australian betting sites are sure to be a hot topic.
