Connections not giving up on Chautauqua

Connections of Champion sprinter Chautauqua haven’t given up on the horse just yet despite another failure to get his barrier certificate passed at Rosehill this morning.

Part owner Rupert Legh spoke on Sky Sports Radio, when asked if they will continue with Chautauqua’s preparation it was a straightforward answer “Most definitely.”

Although connections are keen to press on with Chautauqua’s plans Legh was disappointed with how the trial wen’t after he was optimistic the horse would jump with them.

“We went there with a fair degree of hope and I can’t say anything else but we’re disappointed,” Legh said.

“I feel more disappointed for John [Hawkes] because I know how much effort and work has gone into the horse and it would have been great to see the horse jump and give him some credit for the amount of work he has put into him,” he added.

“If you saw the horse in work, and saw his condition, you don’t see a more happier or healthier horse in your lifetime, so you know we’re all scratching our heads.

“But at the end of the day he did something different to what he’s done in his past couple of failures out of the jump-outs – he actually did take a step forward and he did chase after them.

“It’s more than what he did previously so maybe we are making a good bit of headway.

“At the end of the day we’ll do what we think is the right thing by Chautauqua and he gives us every indication he wants to be a racehorse, he’s done that in the last two weeks since his last mishap at Rosehill, otherwise we wouldn’t have jumped him out today.”

Chautauqua is still being targeted at The Everest in October.
