Cinch does it easy in Tasmanian Oaks 2025

Lindsay Park added another chapter to its storied legacy in the Tasmanian Oaks as Cinch claimed victory in the $150,000 Listed race under the lights at Launceston on Friday night.

Trained by Ben, Will, and JD Hayes, the daughter of Dundeel built on her dominant 2-1/2-length maiden win over 1732m at Sale on February 2 by delivering an even more emphatic performance over 2100m.

This marked the first Tasmanian Oaks win for Will and JD Hayes, though Ben had previously triumphed in the race alongside Tom Dabernig in 2021 with Chequerboard. David Hayes had also enjoyed success, having won three of the seven runnings between 2007 and 2013.

“Hot favourite and winner a long way from home, Cinch captures first stakes victory in the Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Oaks over 2100m at Launceston.
With just 5 runs (2 wins and 2 placings), Cinch becomes the 34th stakes winner for Dundeel and is a half-sister to Golden…”

Jockey Anthony Darmanin stepped in for Daniel Stackhouse, who had guided Cinch to victory at Sale but opted to ride at Moonee Valley instead, securing a double there, including the Listed Torney Cup aboard Deakin.

“Big thanks to Ben, Will, and JD for giving me the ride tonight. Stacky was supposed to come but didn’t, so I’m glad I could get the win for them,” Darmanin said.

Cinch, the $3 favourite, dominated the field, winning by three lengths over Moorlands Miss ($10), who edged out Luvya Mumma ($15) for second place.

Darmanin positioned Cinch positively early on and felt confident throughout.

“Alana had it easy in front, and I was just cantering. It felt like I was doing two laps of the big sand—she was that relaxed,” he said.

“She got a little too comfortable at one point, so I gave her a slap on the shoulder to keep her focused. When I asked her to go, she took off.”

Cinch’s victory made her the second Black Type winner for her dam, Eye For Fun, who also produced the 2014 Golden Slipper champion, Mossfun.
