The Chipping Norton Stakes has been through some distance changes over the years, initially run over 1 1/4 miles or roughly 2000 metres between 1925 and 1971.  In 1972 this event became a 2100 metre race, a distance that was shortened to 1600 metres in 1980.  The Chipping Norton Stakes was a Principal Race between 1925 and 1979, graduating to a Group 2 race in 1980 and a Group 1 race in 1986.

The Chipping Norton Stakes is named after the suburb Chipping Norton, located in Liverpool roughly 27 kilometres south-west of Sydney. The Chipping Norton Stakes is usually held together with the Liverpool City Cup as part of the City of Liverpool festivities, although it was run at Randwick Racecourse in 1992, 2001 and 2008.
