It was another standout day in the saddle for champion jockey William Pike, who showcased his class with a treble at Bunbury, including a victory in the Belmont Oaks, further solidifying his lead in both the Australian and Perth Jockey Premiership races.
Pike struck early with an effortless win aboard Twisted Steel in the opener, guided hot favourite Fancy Red to a memorable victory in the Oaks, and signed off the meeting with a stylish success aboard Supernatural in the last.
Fancy Red has been a model of consistency since her debut, with five wins and three placings from her past eight starts, and proved her staying potential with a dominant 1400m win at Pinjarra last week before stepping up again to take the Belmont Oaks.
Her Oaks triumph extended the dominance of Pike and trainer Adam Durrant in the race, marking their 12th combined win in the event, and giving Pike a hat-trick following wins aboard Petrouchka (2024) and Ihts Closing Inn (2023).
“Honestly, I didn’t think she’d run it out,” Pike told Tabradio. “I thought she’d had enough and was due for a break, but I’m happy to be wrong on this one. Adam and the owners had the race picked out a long time ago and they nailed it.”
Pike also praised emerging star Twisted Steel, who remains unbeaten and could be aimed at the Ascot carnival later this year by trainer Simon Miller.
“He felt terrific underneath me,” Pike said. “If all horses were that smooth, it would almost be too easy. He’s definitely one with serious upside.”
Following Saturday’s treble, Pike sits on 157.5 winners for the season nationwide, with Blake Shinn chasing on 150. In Perth, he holds a narrow lead over Chris Parnham, 98.5 to 94.
“The local premiership is my focus,” Pike added. “That’s the one I really want, but taking out the national title too wouldn’t hurt.”
