Champagne Stakes Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The $400,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes for the two year olds over 1600m is one of two Group 1s at Randwick on the final day of Group 1 racing for the 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

The majority of the juvenile field is stepping up to the 1600m for the first time with the exception of Untamed and Fayerra who finished first and third in the Fernhill Mile at Randwick last Saturday.

Untamed is one of three runners for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden who will also saddle up Inglis Sires’ winner King’s Legacy and promising colt Aim while trainer Anthony Cummings will put a saddle on Philizzy as well as Fayerra.

King’s Legacy

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained King’s Legacy powered to the line to win the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ over 1400m at Randwick on Day One Of The Championships and is definitely the one to beat stepping up to the 1600m of the Champagne Stakes.

Glenfiddich

Victorian colt Glenfiddich raced in the leading division in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ before fading to finish sixth and will find this no easier.

Aim

Aim has shown above average ability with two wins from six starts and hasn’t been that far off the mark recently and has place claims on his latest fifth to his stablemate King’s Legacy in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ over 1400m at Randwick on Day One of The Championships.

Holyfield

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Holyfield is the winner of three of his four race starts and has each way claims on his last start win in the Group 3 Schweppervesence over 1400m at Rosehill on March 28.

Untamed

Untamed was strong at the finish of the 1600m when a narrow winner in the Listed Fernhill Mile over the same course and distance as the Champagne Stakes and will figure among the main chances again.

Ole Kirk

Ole Kirk made up plenty of ground from the back when fourth in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) at Randwick on Day One of The Championships and looks suited stepping up to the 1600m of the Champagne Stakes and can figure in the finish.

Not An Option

Kiwi colt Not An Option was a Group 2 winner in New Zealand in December but will have to improve dramatically to be a threat here following his only Sydney run when third in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes over 1100m at Randwick on Day One of The Championships.

Philizzy

Philizzy is the winner of one race from four starts and never threatened at her latest outing when seventh in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Fayerra

The Anthony Cummings trained Fayerra also has the experience of racing over the Randwick Mile with a third to Untamed in the Listed Fernhill Mile and she has a great chance to figure amongst the prizemoney again.

Mandalong Beyond

Mandalong Beyond is unplaced from two race starts and is way out of her depth here.
