Paul Perry will be out to turn the tables on training rival Gerald Ryan with Scratch Me Lucky in the Group One Champagne Stakes.
The colt has been beaten by Ryan-trained two-year-olds at his past two starts when second to Bachman in the Group Three Schweppervescence and second again in the Group One Sires’ Produce Stakes won by Peggy Jean.
The two 1400m races were held on heavy ground which he handled well and rain is forecast in Sydney later in the week.
Both Bachman and Peggy Jean will be among Scratch Me Lucky’s rivals in Saturday’s Group One race over 1600 metres.
“He came out of the Sires’ really well,” Perry’s foreman son Shannon said.
“He hasn’t put a foot wrong and we’re hoping for a bit of rain.”
Ryan could have three runners but Black Opal Stakes winner Lucky Raquie will only join Bachman and Peggy Jean if the rain stays away.
“She showed she didn’t like the ground in the Sires’ Produce,” Ryan said.
“She won’t run if it’s wet but the other two will.
“All three have done really well and come out of their last starts in fine order.”
Ryan has won 14 two-year-old races this season with nine individual horses.
Saturday’s Fernhill Handicap winner Veuvelicious is among the 10 entries for the Champagne as former jockey Brent Stanley bids for his first Group One win as a trainer.
Stanley won the 1996 Caulfield Cup on David Moodie’s Arctic Scent and the prominent Victorian owner is also a shareholder in Veuvelicious.
The Northern Meteor filly was a dominant winner of the Listed Fernhill (1600m), stretching her lead the further she went.
South Australian Sires’ Produce winner Go Indy Go is also in Sydney for the Group One.
Race jockey Chad Schofield will make the trip to Sydney from Melbourne to partner the filly in a gallop at Randwick on Tuesday morning.
She is trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and is closely related to 2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed.
